A ratio showing how much of the business is financed by debt, most often total liabilities divided by total assets. The higher it is, the more the business depends on its creditors and the more exposed it is to a slowdown. The debt-to-equity ratio, a variant listed in the exam profile, compares debt with the owners’ equity instead.
