The construction work exams 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.2 and 1.3 are not prepared like the management exams: the construction code is on the table, and everything turns on how fast you find the right article and the right line of the right table. This cheat sheet is a starting point, before you move on to practice.

Which exam, and which code

The guide recalls which exam you sit according to your subclass (50, 53, 55 or 55 profile elements, in 3 hours, with 60% to pass) and what the Board’s sheets provide. A "Which code?" box settles the question that comes up most: Chapter I (Building) has been based on the NBC 2020 as amended for Québec since April 17, 2025, the earlier text may still be used for work begun before October 17, 2027, but the exam sheets name the NBC 2015 as amended as the book provided. Study with the edition on your sheet. The links to the free NRC PDFs are in the guide.

Looking things up fast in Division B

Five habits to find a value without losing time: place the building in the right part, go through the index, read every paragraph of the article, read the whole table with its notes, and use the page numbers.

The ten themes and the values that come up

The guide presents RBQexam’s ten modules (from "Legal, normative and regulatory framework" to "Sustainable development and environment") and sixteen values with their article number, in our own words: scope of Part 9, wood-frame limits, allowable soil pressure, vapour barrier, stairs, guards, egress window, corridors. It ends on five exam traps, including the empty section 9.36 in the NBC 2015 as amended.

A look inside

  • The table of the four exams: subclass, elements, modules.
  • Five habits for looking things up fast in the code.
  • The ten modules and what you look for in each.
  • Sixteen values with their article, and five traps.

Who it is for, and what it leaves out

It is for the candidate who must sit at least one construction work exam among 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.2 and 1.3. It reproduces no text or table of the code: it gives article numbers and values to reread in your own copy. It does not replace practice or reading the code itself. For the management exams, see the exam-by-exam cheat sheets and the 4-week study plan.
